The agro-mafias control an illegal sector of the food system, involving criminal activity and the gross exploitation of human beings.
Illegal hiring in agriculture, the laundering of criminal money through the black and gray markets, rackets, loan sharking with small businesses in difficulty, price fixing: unlike in many other sectors of the economy, the agricultural mafias are often not in competition with each other, and illicit earnings are shared equally, clan wars put aside.
To speak about the battle to restore legality we’ve invited Don Luigi Ciotti, priest, journalist and social activist. In 1965 he founded Gruppo Abele, which has worked over the years to help people in need, particularly people with addiction problems. In 1995 he also founded Libera, an association that works to combat organized crime, promote the culture of democratic legality and social justice, and to honor the memory of all the victims of the various mafias.
The Food Talks are new and freely accessible format of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto: ten minutes for our guests to explore their thoughts on the world we live in, and the future we want for it. The full Food Talk with Don Luigi Ciotti will be released on October 11.
